What is Samhain?

Samhain (from the Old Irish meaning "summer's end") marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter in the ancient Celtic calendar. Celebrated from the evening of October 31st to November 1st, it was one of four great Gaelic seasonal festivals — alongside Imbolc (spring), Bealtaine (summer), and Lughnasadh (harvest).

For the Celts, Samhain was a liminal time — a threshold between worlds — when the boundary between the living and the dead grew thin. Spirits could cross over, ancestors could be honoured, and the future could be glimpsed.
